| What is Central Heating? |
Central Heating comprises of a central heating unit position externally, or internally, which is connected to a duct system with registers going to the areas you require heated. These are generally installed near windows, sliding doors, etc to create a heat curtain around your house, therefore keeping you nice and warm.
Choosing a Gas Ducted Heating System can be a difficult and confusing task, with the amount of units, makes, models on the market, how do you choose?
Here are some easy tips to keep in mind, which can make your mind up and lead you in the right direction:
1. Look at the term you intend to spend at the current residence.
2. Long-term 5 years, you should look at mid to high-efficiency systems to recoup the initial outlay of your system.
3. Short term 2 to 4 years, a basic system that heats well, you should purchase this cheaper, but gas consumption is greater.
4. Do you require add-on cooling at a later stage?
Then make sure your ductwork is sized correctly when installing your heater.
5. Check to see how well your house is insulated. Eg. wall, ceiling, curtains, glass areas. These are some of the major heat loss factors.
6. Always insist on having a filter installed on your return air grill. This stops all dust, dirt, dog hair etc. drawing into the system and then returning it to you in the air stream.
7. Make sure the heating unit you purchase has a good warranty and a good backup support team for service just in case of breakdowns. Generally manufacturers give 3-year parts and labour, 10 year on burner and heat exchange.
8. Choose a thermostat that you can understand so you can use the system correctly.
9. Ductwork on a heating system is important. This contains your heat before it reaches your floor outlet. It should have a good rating generally R1 is suitable.
